Private Drum Tutoring in London: Beginners to Intermediate Welcome

Want to learn a song from your favourite artist? Work your way up the grades or even learn to play in a band setting? This is something I can help you with. As a drum tutor in London, my private drum lessons for beginners and intermediate players are tailored to each student, covering technique, timing, improvisation, and song performance, ensuring your drumming goals are always achieved.

Having taught drums for 15 years (children from the age of 5 to adults) on a one-to-one and group level, I take pride in guiding students from total beginners to talented players who can contribute high standards and fresh ideas within band settings.

I provide theory-based study through a wealth of material, as well as Rock School grades 1-8, with many students achieving Distinctions. Develop lesson plans based on the progression and aptitude of each student. I’m fully insured and DBS certified and offer lessons in a professional studio or can travel to you within London and the home counties.

Tom Houghton Drummer

Personalised Drum Tutoring in London for Real Musical Growth

Teaching drums is one of the most rewarding parts of my career. I work one to one with students across London, building their skills at a pace that feels natural and encouraging. Whether someone wants to learn their favourite song, improve their technique, or prepare for graded exams, I tailor every lesson to their personal goals.

My sessions focus on timing, groove, musical understanding, and performance confidence, helping students become well-rounded drummers rather than just players of patterns. I’ve taught both children and adults for many years, and I enjoy finding the approach that motivates each person. When a student starts feeling the music rather than just following the notes, that’s when lessons become meaningful.

Learn Drums in a Supportive, Structured, and Performance-Focused Environment

I’ve spent over a decade helping beginners and intermediate drummers go from their first beat to full band-ready ability. My teaching blends practical playing with theory, sight reading, and graded study so students always understand what they’re learning and why.

Many of my students work toward Rock School exams, and I guide them through every step with clear structure and consistent progression. I’m fully insured and DBS certified, and I teach in a professional studio or travel to students within London and nearby areas. I’m not interested in producing copies of my style. I want every student to find their own voice behind the kit, play with confidence, and enjoy the journey of becoming a stronger musician.

Frequently Asked Questions

What skill levels do you teach?

Tom teaches complete beginners and intermediate players. Lessons are tailored so each student builds steady drum skills, understanding, and confidence while progressing at their own pace.

You will learn stick control, rhythm reading, groove development, coordination, and timing. Lessons also cover song structure and performance skills so you can play confidently in practice and live settings.

Students need drumsticks and access to a drum kit or practice pad. Beginners can start with a pad and upgrade later as skills and interest grow.

Tom guides students through stage preparation, timing control, and playing with backing tracks. He helps build confidence so students feel ready to perform in school, bands, or local events.

Tom encourages students to create their own drum patterns and fills. This helps them understand song structure and develop personal style while maintaining technical control and rhythm accuracy.
